करवा चौथ व्रत कथा (Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha in Hindi) Karva Chauth Story
1 प्रथम कथा
बहुत समय पहले की बात है, एक साहूकार के सात बेटे और उनकी एक बहन करवा थी। सभी सातों भाई अपनी बहन से बहुत प्यार करते थे। यहाँ तक कि वे पहले उसे खाना खिलाते और बाद में स्वयं खाते थे। एक बार उनकी बहन ससुराल से मायके आई हुई थी।

शाम को भाई जब अपना व्यापार-व्यवसाय बंद कर घर आए तो देखा उनकी बहन बहुत व्याकुल थी। सभी भाई खाना खाने बैठे और अपनी बहन से भी खाने का आग्रह करने लगे, लेकिन बहन ने बताया कि उसका आज करवा चौथ का निर्जल व्रत है और वह खाना सिर्फ चंद्रमा को देखकर उसे अर्घ्‍य देकर ही खा सकती है। चूँकि चंद्रमा अभी तक नहीं निकला है, इसलिए वह भूख-प्यास से व्याकुल हो उठी है।

सबसे छोटे भाई को अपनी बहन की हालत देखी नहीं जाती और वह दूर पीपल के पेड़ पर एक दीपक जलाकर चलनी की ओट में रख देता है। दूर से देखने पर वह ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि जैसे चतुर्थी का चाँद उदित हो रहा हो।

इसके बाद भाई अपनी बहन को बताता है कि चाँद निकल आया है, तुम उसे अर्घ्य देने के बाद भोजन कर सकती हो। बहन खुशी के मारे सीढ़ियों पर चढ़कर चाँद को देखती है, उसे अर्घ्‍य देकर खाना खाने बैठ जाती है।

वह पहला टुकड़ा मुँह में डालती है तो उसे छींक आ जाती है। दूसरा टुकड़ा डालती है तो उसमें बाल निकल आता है और जैसे ही तीसरा टुकड़ा मुँह में डालने की कोशिश करती है तो उसके पति की मृत्यु का समाचार उसे मिलता है। वह बौखला जाती है।

उसकी भाभी उसे सच्चाई से अवगत कराती है कि उसके साथ ऐसा क्यों हुआ। करवा चौथ का व्रत गलत तरीके से टूटने के कारण देवता उससे नाराज हो गए हैं और उन्होंने ऐसा किया है।

सच्चाई जानने के बाद करवा निश्चय करती है कि वह अपने पति का अंतिम संस्कार नहीं होने देगी और अपने सतीत्व से उन्हें पुनर्जीवन दिलाकर रहेगी। वह पूरे एक साल तक अपने पति के शव के पास बैठी रहती है। उसकी देखभाल करती है। उसके ऊपर उगने वाली सूईनुमा घास को वह एकत्रित करती जाती है।

एक साल बाद फिर करवा चौथ का दिन आता है। उसकी सभी भाभियाँ करवा चौथ का व्रत रखती हैं। जब भाभियाँ उससे आशीर्वाद लेने आती हैं तो वह प्रत्येक भाभी से 'यम सूई ले लो, पिय सूई दे दो, मुझे भी अपनी जैसी सुहागिन बना दो' ऐसा आग्रह करती है, लेकिन हर बार भाभी उसे अगली भाभी से आग्रह करने का कह चली जाती है।

इस प्रकार जब छठे नंबर की भाभी आती है तो करवा उससे भी यही बात दोहराती है। यह भाभी उसे बताती है कि चूँकि सबसे छोटे भाई की वजह से उसका व्रत टूटा था अतः उसकी पत्नी में ही शक्ति है कि वह तुम्हारे पति को दोबारा जीवित कर सकती है, इसलिए जब वह आए तो तुम उसे पकड़ लेना और जब तक वह तुम्हारे पति को जिंदा न कर दे, उसे नहीं छोड़ना। ऐसा कह के वह चली जाती है।

सबसे अंत में छोटी भाभी आती है। करवा उनसे भी सुहागिन बनने का आग्रह करती है, लेकिन वह टालमटोली करने लगती है। इसे देख करवा उन्हें जोर से पकड़ लेती है और अपने सुहाग को जिंदा करने के लिए कहती है। भाभी उससे छुड़ाने के लिए नोचती है, खसोटती है, लेकिन करवा नहीं छोड़ती है।

अंत में उसकी तपस्या को देख भाभी पसीज जाती है और अपनी छोटी अँगुली को चीरकर उसमें से अमृत उसके पति के मुँह में डाल देती है। करवा का पति तुरंत श्रीगणेश-श्रीगणेश कहता हुआ उठ बैठता है। इस प्रकार प्रभु कृपा से उसकी छोटी भाभी के माध्यम से करवा को अपना सुहाग वापस मिल जाता है। हे श्री गणेश माँ गौरी जिस प्रकार करवा को चिर सुहागन का वरदान आपसे मिला है, वैसा ही सब सुहागिनों को मिले।

2 द्वितीय कथा
इस कथा का सार यह है कि शाकप्रस्थपुर वेदधर्मा ब्राह्मण की विवाहिता पुत्री वीरवती ने करवा चौथ का व्रत किया था। नियमानुसार उसे चंद्रोदय के बाद भोजन करना था, परंतु उससे भूख नहीं सही गई और वह व्याकुल हो उठी। उसके भाइयों से अपनी बहन की व्याकुलता देखी नहीं गई और उन्होंने पीपल की आड़ में आतिशबाजी का सुंदर प्रकाश फैलाकर चंद्रोदय दिखा दिया और वीरवती को भोजन करा दिया।

परिणाम यह हुआ कि उसका पति तत्काल अदृश्य हो गया। अधीर वीरवती ने बारह महीने तक प्रत्येक चतुर्थी को व्रत रखा और करवा चौथ के दिन उसकी तपस्या से उसका पति पुनः प्राप्त हो गया।

3 तृतीय कथा
एक समय की बात है कि एक करवा नाम की पतिव्रता स्त्री अपने पति के साथ नदी के किनारे के गाँव में रहती थी। एक दिन उसका पति नदी में स्नान करने गया। स्नान करते समय वहाँ एक मगर ने उसका पैर पकड़ लिया। वह मनुष्य करवा-करवा कह के अपनी पत्नी को पुकारने लगा।

उसकी आवाज सुनकर उसकी पत्नी करवा भागी चली आई और आकर मगर को कच्चे धागे से बाँध दिया। मगर को बाँधकर यमराज के यहाँ पहुँची और यमराज से कहने लगी- हे भगवन! मगर ने मेरे पति का पैर पकड़ लिया है। उस मगर को पैर पकड़ने के अपराध में आप अपने बल से नरक में ले जाओ।

यमराज बोले- अभी मगर की आयु शेष है, अतः मैं उसे नहीं मार सकता। इस पर करवा बोली, अगर आप ऐसा नहीं करोगे तो मैं आप को श्राप देकर नष्ट कर दूँगी। सुनकर यमराज डर गए और उस पतिव्रता करवा के साथ आकर मगर को यमपुरी भेज दिया और करवा के पति को दीर्घायु दी। हे करवा माता! जैसे तुमने अपने पति की रक्षा की, वैसे सबके पतियों की रक्षा करना।

4 चौथी कथा
एक बार पांडु पुत्र अर्जुन तपस्या करने नीलगिरी नामक पर्वत पर गए। इधर द्रोपदी बहुत परेशान थीं। उनकी कोई खबर न मिलने पर उन्होंने कृष्ण भगवान का ध्यान किया और अपनी चिंता व्यक्त की। कृष्ण भगवान ने कहा- बहना, इसी तरह का प्रश्न एक बार माता पार्वती ने शंकरजी से किया था।

पूजन कर चंद्रमा को अर्घ्‍य देकर फिर भोजन ग्रहण किया जाता है। सोने, चाँदी या मिट्टी के करवे का आपस में आदान-प्रदान किया जाता है, जो आपसी प्रेम-भाव को बढ़ाता है। पूजन करने के बाद महिलाएँ अपने सास-ससुर एवं बड़ों को प्रणाम कर उनका आशीर्वाद लेती हैं।

तब शंकरजी ने माता पार्वती को करवा चौथ का व्रत बतलाया। इस व्रत को करने से स्त्रियाँ अपने सुहाग की रक्षा हर आने वाले संकट से वैसे ही कर सकती हैं जैसे एक ब्राह्मण ने की थी। प्राचीनकाल में एक ब्राह्मण था। उसके चार लड़के एवं एक गुणवती लड़की थी।

एक बार लड़की मायके में थी, तब करवा चौथ का व्रत पड़ा। उसने व्रत को विधिपूर्वक किया। पूरे दिन निर्जला रही। कुछ खाया-पीया नहीं, पर उसके चारों भाई परेशान थे कि बहन को प्यास लगी होगी, भूख लगी होगी, पर बहन चंद्रोदय के बाद ही जल ग्रहण करेगी।

भाइयों से न रहा गया, उन्होंने शाम होते ही बहन को बनावटी चंद्रोदय दिखा दिया। एक भाई पीपल की पेड़ पर छलनी लेकर चढ़ गया और दीपक जलाकर छलनी से रोशनी उत्पन्न कर दी। तभी दूसरे भाई ने नीचे से बहन को आवाज दी- देखो बहन, चंद्रमा निकल आया है, पूजन कर भोजन ग्रहण करो। बहन ने भोजन ग्रहण किया।

भोजन ग्रहण करते ही उसके पति की मृत्यु हो गई। अब वह दुःखी हो विलाप करने लगी, तभी वहाँ से रानी इंद्राणी निकल रही थीं। उनसे उसका दुःख न देखा गया। ब्राह्मण कन्या ने उनके पैर पकड़ लिए और अपने दुःख का कारण पूछा, तब इंद्राणी ने बताया- तूने बिना चंद्र दर्शन किए करवा चौथ का व्रत तोड़ दिया इसलिए यह कष्ट मिला।

अब तू वर्ष भर की चौथ का व्रत नियमपूर्वक करना तो तेरा पति जीवित हो जाएगा। उसने इंद्राणी के कहे अनुसार चौथ व्रत किया तो पुनः सौभाग्यवती हो गई। इसलिए प्रत्येक स्त्री को अपने पति की दीर्घायु के लिए यह व्रत करना चाहिए। द्रोपदी ने यह व्रत किया और अर्जुन सकुशल मनोवांछित फल प्राप्त कर वापस लौट आए। तभी से हिन्दू महिलाएँ अपने अखंड सुहाग के लिए करवा चौथ व्रत करती हैं।
